"HOW TO MARKET AND PROMOTE A NEW SINGLE"
When presenting a new single to the public as an artist or record label the mind set must be that of a business mentally; because a single, album or mixtape is a product as much as it is art. If you've been dropping music for awhile and haven't seen organic number's relating to views, listens and audience engagement chances are that you haven't been treating your art like a product of business once it’s been completed in its art form.
Don't get me wrong here you must also have a great song, but even a good song can do very well in the music business with the right marketing and promotion. With that I have put together a simple opinion styled guide to creating an audience for your new single. (i.e.: Album or Mixtape).
THE SONG: As stated before the song must be at lease good to begin with. The main things to consider are content of the song; what is the song about, its emotional connection to its target audience. It should be produced over an original beat production for various reasons including the ability to place in the market for sale. Also the original beat production shouldn't have any samples included just to cut out the headache of sample copyright laws.
ARTWORK: To many artists the artwork doesn't seem like a highly important part of a single, but it's quite the opposite. Dope eye catching artwork concepts go a long way towards the sale of a record or its online listening potential. The artwork's role is to be the first level of product to consumer connection. Next it’s the visual speaker to the sound it represents; mainly when seen on and offline consumers will subconsciously associate the artwork to a song, artist or emotion. This creates the main importance of artwork.
DESCRIPTION: This part of a new single is very rare, but can change the overall scope of a new single and that's adding a description of what the song is about when placing it online. You'd be surprised at the percentage of music lovers that appreciate descriptions to songs. When created correctly it places a sense of need, wants and must in the mind. Music lovers want to feel like they are in the know or the first too when it comes to great music.
PRODUCTION DETAILS: Production details are needed for a number of reasons on the professional business scale of a song, but I want to focus on its importance to the consumer. As a consumer absorbs the audio production of a new single that's great in quality; production details for that song, provides the listener with essential attributes needed to connect them to the creative process an artist goes through to produce a song.
VISUAL PRODUCTION: Music has always done better with visuals and in today's industry it's especially important when connecting to new consumers. One major reason is the massive digital content generated on a daily basis. Most people prefer to watch new media instead of reading it or audio only consumption of it. So, to compete you better have a visual ready for sharing. When it comes to your visual the quality and story it tells visually are most important; it's what gives viewers the need to share your work with friends.
VISUAL PROMOTION: This is a short, creative and sweet approach to connecting with your target audience; the purpose of a visual promotion is to grab the attention of your target audience and bring them to the actual product or single that you currently want them to support. You can use the time limit of Instagram to create your visual promotion project… at the moment its 60secs… you can also create a 30sec project.
DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION: Oh, man this is super important while at the same time a no brainer considering a fairly new tool called “Tunecore” which takes care of so many areas of music distribution that you can start your own online label with a debit card and the push of a button. With the help of Tunecore you can get your brand new single on iTunes, spotify and tidal and so many other online places it’s insane to NOT use them. Let me tell you a secret, platforms like Tunecore are the reasons why record labels are not signing new artist the way they use too. FIELD PROMOTION/MARKETING: Back in the day, field marketing was the main promotional tool for a record label and some of the cooler businesses at time. Field marketing or the “Street Team” is still a very important part of the success of a company and/or its products. Simply put it’s strongly recommended that you build a “Street Team” to help you in moments of new product releases.
SOCIAL MEDIA BLOGGERS: You may not want to believe it or except it or you may just believe you can do it all on your own social media platform, but the truth is; as an artist you need these talented writers to success with your overall goal of notoriety. So, embrace it with open arms and humble yourself.
EMAIL MARKETING: As quite as it’s kept, emails are highly respected in the world of business and to a large number of music fans that seek the new; regularly… well the ones that sign up to be a part of your mailing list; it’s well appreciated.
